At our recent National Philanthropy Day celebration, keynote speaker Kiran Ahuja, CEO of Philanthropy Northwest, wondered why, in today’s world, do inequities continue to exist? Whether from the #Me Too movement, Black Lives Matter, or Colin Kaepernick, a shift is happening in philanthropy, but we have a long way to go.

Our function of philanthropy is to highlight important topics and educate the public about them. Equity, leadership, harassment—these issues are as important as any we will ever raise funds for in our career. They affect every one of us.

That is why AFP International launched the Women’s Impact Initiative (WII) earlier this year. It is AFP’s response to a series of issues around the role of women in fundraising including gender inequity, sexual harassment, and implicit bias. Locally, we have been focusing on demonstrating equity through an increase in speakers from diverse backgrounds and topics that address equity and inclusion topics.

I sit on the International Board and I’m proud to say that under our new CEO, Mike Geiger, change can’t happen fast enough. After the release of the Sexual Harassment Survey this spring, AFP launched a pilot WII Mentoring & Leadership Development program on October 1, completed a glossary of gender equity terms, and is working with a communications company to bring the glossary to life through videos and the creation of a “Word A Day” social media campaign.

WII will begin a quantitative analysis of sexual harassment data and assess current research on leadership in fundraising. AFP is partnering with others to broaden our impact. For instance, on the website you’ll find a great resource from DonorPerfect “The Nonprofit Leadership Workbook for Women” and be on the lookout for an online negotiation workshop developed in partnership with American Association of University Women.

While AFP is taking a leadership role in addressing these critical issues on a national scale, we’re not going to do it all at once—this is a long-term project. And we’re not going to do it alone. We need all ideas and perspectives. That is why locally, we will continue the work of our DEIA committee to reach out to traditionally underrepresented communities through scholarships, mentoring and representation as speakers and guests at events. We hope you’ll join us as we begin these important first steps in addressing inequities.

Add your voice. Use the discussion groups AFP has set up. It’s an opportunity to ask questions or share your thoughts and viewpoints. AFP wants to hear from you!

High Net Worth Donors: Where They are Giving and What Motivates Them

Thursday, December 6 | 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
U.S. Trust, Lake Washington Room, 33rd Floor, Seattle

Think about your top donors. What is consistent among them? How do you engage each one differently? How can you engage your other donors with high capacity to inspire them to invest more in your nonprofit?

Join Jan Jacobs as she shares insights into the giving practices of high net worth individuals and families in the U.S. Jan will discuss national trends and how giving is changing. She will also look at the types of causes where high net worth individuals are giving, how those individuals volunteer and what else motivates that level of support.

2018 Winter Social & Annual Meeting

Monday, December 10 | 6 to 8 p.m.
Sole Repair Shop, Seattle

Growing within the field of fundraising is all about connections. If you are new to the sector, you might not be familiar with this concept. Ask any seasoned professional and they will tell you that your next position is most likely to come through a first- or second-degree connection.

How do you make the connections needed to advance in your career? Joining colleagues at the Advancement Northwest Winter Social is a great start. You'll have the chance to spend a couple of hours with fellow fundraisers from around the region. It's a great time to share successes and get advice.

Join us on December 10 to build your network! As part of the annual meeting, current AFP Advancement Northwest members will have the opportunity to vote on the 2019 leadership. We are delighted to have such a diverse and dynamic group of volunteers represented in the slate of candidates as well as the 2019 Board Officers. Check out the full proposed slate of directors and officers and if you haven't already, register today!

Remember Advancement Northwest on Giving Tuesday

Thanksgiving is quickly followed by two of the biggest shopping days of the year; Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The comes Giving Tuesday.

You likely have a strategy for Giving Tuesday for your nonprofit. Have you considered who you would like to support? How about Advancement Northwest?

“Nothing has had a greater impact on my career – in fundraising or in nonprofit leadership –than AFP Advancement Northwest. The people; their smarts; the community; its value; the trainings; the wisdom; the inspiration: These are the reasons I’m a proud (and grateful) member of this powerful professional association.”

– Peter Drury, Make-A-Wish Alaska and Washington

Submit a Proposal to Present at the 2019 Forum on Strategic Fundraising

Have you been rockin' a campaign? Do you have stellar communication skills, especially with supervisors? What about ideas for making nonprofits more inclusive? We want to hear them!

The RFP process for the 2019 Forum on Strategic Fundraising is now open. The Forum is a core part of how we deliver on our mission to build leaders who fundraise to transform communities locally and across the world. You can be part of that transformation by sharing your strategies, tips, and tricks.

While you're at it, mark your calendar for June 6 and 7 for the Forum on Strategic Fundraising. The 2019 event will be held in a new location at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, WA.

Interested in speaking on a smaller scale? The Advancement Northwest's Core Programs committee is planning on a new approach for planning monthly programs in 2019 for Essentials and Leading Edge. The committee will be curating 1 program per month to bring improved focus on programming and sector trends as well as needs for our membership. For 2019, we will be focusing each quarter on a different phase of the Donor Lifecycle. If you have questions or inquiries, you may contact Vice President of Core Programs, Troy Coalman
