Notes from the Desk of the President

Seattle hosts the country's largest National Philanthropy Day celebration and with good reason. With Outstanding Young Philanthropists like McKenna Schwab, a teen who has helped Make-A-Wish and Seattle Children's raise millions, to a trio of sisters who accepted the award for Outstanding Philanthropic Small Business Phnom Penh Noodle House, the Pacific Northwest is rich in examples of generosity and compassion. Each of the 2018 honorees are extraordinary models of what is good in our world and their personal stories and motivations for giving had the 600+ attendees reaching for a tissue more than once.

This year's keynote speaker, CEO of Philanthropy Northwest, Kiran Ahju shared how her passion for service and commitment to improving the lives of communities of color grew out of a formative educational experience at her alma mater, Spelman College. Kiran's comments about the importance of turning intention into action were echoed by several recipients including Social Justice Fund Executive Director, Mijo Lee. Lee called out the brave men and women who risk their livelihoods and even their lives in the fight for justice, reminding us to not despair even in the darkest of hours. Noting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s words "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice" whilst imploring us to take action because the arc bends toward justice only when people pull it in that direction.

Advancement Northwest is committed to providing philanthropic awards and we rely on attendee feedback to enhance the National Philanthropy Day experience. If you attended this year's event, please complete this brief evaluation so we can continually improve our event.

Warm regards,

Conversation with Nate Greenland, a Member of the 2018 Scholarship Cohort

AFP Advancement Northwest offers scholarships for promising fundraising professionals. Recipients have the opportunity to attend trainings for free, be paired with a mentor, and join a committee to build their network. Nate Greenland is part of the 2018 scholarship cohort from Everett. He shared with us his thoughts on the experience and his appreciation for everyone who gave to make this opportunity possible.

Tell us why/how you became involved in the fundraising/nonprofit profession.

Like a lot of us in fundraising, I fell into this. After college, I lived and served for a year in Chicago’s inner-city – West Garfield. I was significantly impacted by my time there. After returning home, I wanted to continue helping families trapped in poverty. No opportunities were open in the social service sector at the time, so I worked for a mortgage company. I was at a wedding and met Ed, the CEO of Housing Hope at the time. He encouraged me to apply for a job. I did and was hired.

Why did you decide to apply for the Advancement Northwest scholarship?

When I learned that Advancement Northwest was trying to diversify its geographic representation, I got excited. The scholarship offers a robust opportunity to be engaged: being part of the cohort, regular time with a mentor, complimentary admission to the Forum on Strategic Fundraising, National Philanthropy Day, monthly programs, and so much more.

AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course

November 14 and 15, 2018
City University, Seattle

Join us next week for the two-day AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course. If you haven't already registered, time is running out to do so and space is limited.

This event is a great way to learn the core skills needed to be a successful fundraiser. The course is composed of seven modules that have been designed by experienced fundraising professionals to meet the real-world needs and challenges nonprofit organizations face every day. You will learn how to create a fundraising plan, marketing, building, and sustaining relationships, how to secure the gift, effective ways to work with volunteers, and skills for management and accountability.

This intensive program will provide an overview of skills, techniques, and program components for individuals with zero to four years of fundraising experience.

Essentials Educational Program

Financials for Fundraisers

Thursday, November 29 | 8 to 10 a.m.
Campbell & Company

Featuring Ryan Dean

I’m a fundraiser. I don’t have to know about financials, right? Wrong! It's critical for you to be able to read and understand basic accounting reports and be able to translate the information for donors.

Join Ryan Dean for this fun and accessible lesson. Ryan will use training materials and FareStart’s development profit and loss statement so you can learn about the various aspects of finances. He will decrypt acronyms and have you “speaking accounting” in no time.

This is a great session for fundraising professionals of all experience levels who want to improve their financial chops or get a new perspective on the financial positions of nonprofits.

2018 Winter Social & Annual Meeting

Monday, December 10 | 6 to 8 p.m.
Sole Repair Shop, Seattle

Growing within the field of fundraising is all about connections. If you are new to the sector, you might not be familiar with this concept. Ask any seasoned professional and they will tell you that your next position is most likely to come through a first- or second-degree connection.

How do you make the connections needed to advance in your career? Joining colleagues at the Advancement Northwest Winter Social is a great start. You'll have the chance to spend a couple of hours with fellow fundraisers from around the region. It's a great time to share successes and get advice.

Join us on December 10 to build your network! This is also a chance for members to vote on the 2019 Board of Directors and the slate of officers.

Leading Edge Educational Program

High Net Worth Donors: Where They are Giving and What Motivates Them

Thursday, December 6 | 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
U.S. Trust, Lake Washington Room, 33rd Floor, Seattle

Featuring Janet Aldrich Jacobs, CFRE

Every nonprofit is looking for the next big gift. Where do they come from? What is the motivator?

Join Jan Jacobs as she shares insights into the giving practices of high net worth individuals and families in the U.S. Jan will discuss national trends and how giving is changing. She will also look at cases where high net worth individuals are giving, how those individuals volunteer and what else motivates that level of support.

Member Voices

Nothing has had a greater impact on my career – in fundraising or in nonprofit leadership – than AFP Advancement Northwest. The people, their smarts, the community and its value, the trainings, the wisdom, the inspiration. These are the reasons I'm a proud (and grateful) member of this powerful professional association.
Peter Drury, Make-A-Wish Alaska and Washington
